Jumbo began in South Africa as a family-run wholesale business in the mid-1980s. Over time, it built its name by serving traders, independent retailers, small businesses and bulk buyers with a practical mix of food, liquor and general merchandise at value-driven prices. 

In 2001, Jumbo became part of Massmart through the acquisition of the Jumbo Cash & Carry business. That move placed the brand inside one of the region’s biggest wholesale and retail groups. In 2011, Walmart acquired control of Massmart, and Massmart now describes itself as a 100% Walmart-owned African retail group.
